In beautiful landscape, on this self-guided hike in Jotunheimen,  you will explore some of the best hiking trails in the area. Stunning scenery, rich flora, traditional accommodation and local food is just some of the highlights.

Embark on a once-in-a-lifetime, self-guided tour through Norway’s stunning Jotunheimen National Park, complete with five overnight stays amidst its rugged beauty. You can go at your own pace and take breaks and detours whenever you want.

Your adventure begins in Oslo with an overnight stay, followed by a scenic bus journey to the charming Bygdin Høifieldshotel, where you’ll spend two nights. The hotel has a beautiful location by the water, surrounded by green-clad mountains and with several opportunities for short or longer hikes nearby.

The trip continues by boat on the idyllic lake Bygdin with the surrounding mountains reflecting in the water. Next, hike through the renowned Svartdalen Valley, where you’ll be treated to sweeping views of 2,000-meter peaks. Your day concludes at Gjendebu, the Norwegian Trekking Association’s oldest lodge, set at 995 meters above sea level. Known for its delicious local food, Gjendebu offers a unique experience with its rich wildlife, scenic mountain views, and the stunning emerald-green Gjende Lake.

Enjoy two nights at Gjendebu, giving you plenty of time to hike the famous Gjendetunga trail or the Bukkelægre round trip . Hikers here are rewarded with stunning views of the cabin, lake, and surrounding mountain massif. Explore the flora, fauna, and glaciers that make this area so unique and captivating.

From Gjendebu, continue your journey between the lakes Bygdin and Gjende, through the scenic Veslådalen Valley, to the historic Eidsbugarden. Spend the night at Fondsbu, a DNT cabin celebrated for its warm hospitality, cozy atmosphere, and delicious local cuisine.

The final leg of your journey takes you from Eidsbugarden to Flåm, where you’ll experience the gateway to Fjord Norway. Included in your trip is a spectacular 5-hour boat ride on the Sognefjord to Bergen, offering unforgettable views from either the sun deck or the panoramic salon. End your adventure with an overnight stay by Bergen's dockside, perfectly located to explore Bryggen, Fløyen, and other popular attractions.

This self-guided tour is perfect for both solo travelers and groups, offering flexible departure dates and a thoughtfully crafted itinerary. All accommodations, transportation, and route details are arranged in advance, allowing you to focus on the experiences that await you in Norway.

This tour can be combined with the Hardangerfjord Adventure from Bergen.

The local member associations of DNT operate 550 cabins across the country, mark routes and ski tracks. Together they maintain a network of about 22,000 km of marked foot trails and about 7000 km of branch-marked ski tracks. DNT activities are based on extensive volunteer work. Each year, volunteers work in total more than 800,000 hours. In southern Norway, the member associations have large staffed lodges and most other cabins are self-service. In Northern Norway, the member associations have only no-service cabins.
