Experience the Northern Lights on Senja, surrounded by snow-covered mountains, deep fjords and a rugged Arctic coastline. This winter package combines guided Northern Lights experiences with daytime Arctic activities and comfortable accommodation in the fishing village of Mefjordvær.
Northern Lights and Arctic Activities
Your evenings are dedicated to searching for the Aurora Borealis. Local guides follow weather and Northern Lights forecasts and choose locations and timing according to the conditions. This gives you the best available conditions for experiencing the Northern Lights and photographing the Aurora when it appears.
During the day, explore Senja through a selection of guided Arctic activities. The programme is adapted to the weather and conditions, allowing you to experience different sides of the island while spending time outdoors in the winter landscape.
Stay by the Sea in Mefjordvær
Your base is Mefjord Brygge, where comfortable cabins and apartments sit close to the sea and mountains. After a day outdoors, you can relax in peaceful surroundings and enjoy local food and the warm atmosphere before heading out under the Arctic night sky.
This is a good choice if you want to combine a Northern Lights holiday in Norway with guided winter activities and a comfortable base in one of Northern Norway’s most distinctive coastal landscapes.
Northern Lights and Arctic Winter Adventures with Discover Norway
Northern Norway is dark from afternoon until late morning, when the northern lights frequently soar across the sky. The northern lights can be seen when the sky is clear and dark. Peak time is often between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m.
On a very basic level, the phenomenon is quite easy to explain. The lights are created from the collision between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the atmosphere of the earth.
The lights, which are also called aurora borealis, appear at night when the sky is dark. It’s like a celestial ballet of light dancing across the night sky, with a color palette of green, blue, and sometimes even pink and violet.
Although there's no guarantee that the northern lights will appear – they are a natural phenomenon, just like the weather – you are still guaranteed to experience magical light in Northern Norway all through the dark winter season. On clear days, you can see beautiful sunset colors in the south while the sky to the north is a deep midnight blue. In the 'blue hour' at twilight, the snowy landscape is bathed in a glassy, deep blue color.
