The North Sea Cycle Route

Arrival in Kristiansand

- Arrive by plane at Kristiansand Airport (Kjevik)
- Arrive by train to Kristiansand city center.
- Arrive by ferry from Hirtshals, Denmark.

Bike from Kristiansand to Mandal, 53 km

The signage for National Cycle Route 1 begins in Kristiansand city center. The route initially follows a cycling path parallel to the E39 highway for the first 7 km, with some slight elevation. After that, it continues along quieter roads, passing through small towns and charming little boat harbors. Expect a mix of short climbs and descents throughout the day.

Bike from Mandal to Farsund, 65 km

Today’s ride is a rollercoaster with many twists, turns, and ups and downs. You’ll encounter a couple of tough climbs before and after Lyngdal. Around every corner, you’ll discover a new and exciting landscape featuring cozy docks and picturesque wooden houses. Some sections include gravel roads, such as the old postal route towards Tredal. You will pass beautiful beaches along the way, perfect for a quick swim.

Bike from Farsund to Flekkefjord, 79 km

A long and very challenging stage. It starts off gently with easy cycling in the Lista area. Here, the route diverges from National Cycle Route 1 to shorten the stage a bit.
After a while, the route heads towards Vanse and "American Lista," continuing through fertile farmland before a long and strenuous climb up to Steinsheia (240 m.a.s.l.). From there, it descends towards Liknes in Kvinesdal, where you can charge your electric bike. Expect more tough climbs (up to 180 m.a.s.l.) between Liknes and the idyllic village of Feda and between Feda and Flekkefjord. There are two short sections on the E39 highway before reaching Flekkefjord.

Bike from Flekkefjord to Sokndal, 40 km

Another demanding stage through a fantastic landscape of mountains, fjords, and lakes. If you are not deterred by what lies ahead, you can start the day with a detour to the historic island of Hidra (by bike and ferry).
The main route features many ups and downs (up to 280 m.a.s.l) and some steep sections. You will especially notice the climbs out of Flekkefjord, Jøssingfjord, and Åna Sira. In Jøssingfjord, you can visit the Science Museum and take a walk to the famous Helleren rock shelters. In the steep ascent from Jøssingfjord, you can pause at the unique Tunnelstuo rest area.
Consider stopping at the Joker store in Åna Sira if you need to recharge your electric bike. Finally, the day ends in the idyllic and historic village of Sogndalstrand.

Sokndal - Egersund, 33 km

Today's stage passes through a fascinating landscape of heather-covered rocky outcrops and small lakes. You will encounter some uphill sections, but they are less steep than the previous day. The highest point is around 160 m.a.s.l. Expect a series of small climbs followed by descents before the terrain levels out towards the end of the stage. You’ll encounter increased traffic as you approach the main road towards Egersund.

Bike from Egersund to Bryne, 55 km

This stretch offers a variety of natural experiences. The ride begins along the Old Jæren Railway, followed by a scenic journey on Gamle Vestlandske Hovedvei (the Old Westland Main Road) through hilly mountain landscapes. You’ll then reach Jæren, with its diverse scenery of open fields, farms land, and beautiful beaches ideal for surfing and swimming. Noteworthy stops include the WWII beach defenses at Brusand (Hitler's Teeth) and the old cemetery at Varhaug. The final section of the route is signposted as part of the Jærruta cycling route.

Bike from Bryne to Sandnes, 20 - 61 km

A short transfer stage that can be extended with a detour to the coast to visit the beautiful beaches of Orrestranda and Boresanden. Expect increased traffic as you approach Sandnes. The terrain is generally easy for cycling. Follow the map and the signposts for the Jærruta cycling route.
